Chapter Nine

Grant was snapped out of his slumber at five in the morning by the sound of a car zooming down the road. Tom remained blissfully unaware, though, so Grant stayed put and held his new lover a little while longer.

Honestly, he hadn’t been sure if he’d ever get so far into a relationship with the man. Last night he had hoped that maybe they’d head back to Tom’s place and talk a little, or maybe have a few drinks. The idea of sex had been in the back of his mind, of course, but he had thought it very unlikely.

Tom was kind, witty, and cute as hell, but he was also the least confident man Grant had ever met. It seemed that Grant was a good influence on him, though, as Tom came out of his shell a little every time they spent time together. Even so, last night was a shock.

A pleasant one, though. Tom had handled things better than most newbies did, in Grant’s experience, despite the shower not being the best learning ground. It had felt like the right place at the time, though, and Tom hadn’t disagreed.

Careful not to disturb the man with his movements, or his growing hard-on, Grant slowly climbed out of bed and padded down the stairs to the kitchen. They hadn’t made it that far last night, so he had to rifle through a few cupboards until he found what he wanted, but within a few minutes he had Tom’s fancy coffee maker warming up and two clean cups to be filled once the machine was ready.

While he waited, he took up one of the two chairs that sat on either side of a half-circle table against the far wall. A book lay on the table, claiming it could teach someone everything they needed to know about art in a week. From the look and smell, the book was very new. Grant flicked through the pages.

“Trying to bone up for a later conversation?” he asked aloud.

A bemused Tom stepped through the door into the kitchen. “You must have ears like a wolf.”

Grant winked. “Heard you the second you got out of bed.”

Tom shook his head, smiling. “And yes, I thought I’d try and learn a few things prior to our date. Never came up, though.”

Grant put the book down and turned on his chair to watch Tom as the man made coffee. “I never was much for the classics,” he said. “I just found I had a talent for it, and I got lucky with a few contracts early on.”

“Might as well work from home if you can,” Tom said.

“Exactly. Though I try to spend time outside whenever I can.”

“Hence our first meeting,” Tom said, as he walked back to the table.

He brought the coffees on a tray with milk, and sugar, and Grant used both liberally, before downing half the drink in one gulp. Tom raised an eyebrow.

“What?” Grant asked.

“Steel windpipe to go with the wolf ears.”

“Don’t forget the bull’s cock.
